Dance is a creative avenue for self-expression, through which we as dancers, express our feelings. It may help develop our empathetic skills required to perceive and understand emotions.
First, we need to ask, what are the benefits of dancing? Is it an act you participate in just to pass the time during the weekend or a weeknight? Do you dance so you can feel beautiful and graceful for a change, or does it hold something of more value for you?
Of course, dancing is an entertaining exercise, but why is it so captivating? On a personal experience, when I don’t dance for a couple of days, I crave “the dance”!
Why do you dance when the music gets into your soul? Why does dancing sometimes make you laugh out loud with your dance partner?
Most importantly, what is so special about dancing? Why do we get excited and dance for joy?
Dancing has some important benefits which abound for dancers, regardless of their age, nationality, or whether they dance professionally or for fun, all of which we will explore in this article.
If we define “Dancing”, we will find that it’s an energizing, captivating experience. We live it! We feel it! We breathe it! We love it! But why?
Reasons to dance…
Dancing provides many great benefits…
1-Dancing allows us to express ourselves.
2-A sense of community is found within the dance.
3-Dancing provides physical/mental refreshment and relaxation.
4-Laughter and fun… Dancing can provide a lot of entertainment.
5-Dancing is a form of exercise.
6-Dancers find inspiration and motivation as they become lost in the dance.
7-Dancing allows professional dancers to form affiliations.
Of course, sometimes people just want to get the party started! They want to loosen up and go with the sound of the music. They could be clapping while dancing or snapping their fingers. It doesn't matter! Their only purpose is to be one with the music… Live with it!
Let’s go into some more detail…
1-Self-Expression
Dancing allows people to express how they feel at a given moment.
When a couple is dancing, and they look at each other and smile, it's not difficult to realize they are having fun. Dance is an expression of art, in that it appeals to emotions.
Some dances involve fluidity of movement which cheers the crowd. Dancers performing the same moves at the same time also create excitement and enthusiasm.
People feel happy dancing!
2-Sense of Community
People come together through dance. It provides entertainment for people of all ages, races, and backgrounds.
They enjoy time spent together in a positive, lively environment. They are energized and inspired by other dancers around them. The more adventurous dancers sometimes try to copy the moves of others, which provides another sense of entertainment and draws people together.
Strangers have the potential to become friends, and bond more closely because of the positive experiences they've shared on the dance floor.
3-Source of Relaxation
Dancing helps bodies and minds relax as the music and surroundings take people away from their anxiety and frustration for a while.
Mentally, they unwind and have fun, sharing a laugh or two. As their minds relax, their bodies follow. Their muscles loosen up and tension and stress melts away!
4-Entertainment
When people are laughing and trying to keep up with the moves involved in line-dancing, they are being entertained. Their willingness to get on the floor and join in with the others, regardless of whether they embarrass themselves, says a lot.
On the dance floor, we have lots of energy, spirit, and determination, that we are willing to prove, thus being entertained.
5-Exercise
Dancing is a great form of aerobic exercise since it works many muscles in the body. Muscles become stretched, conditioned, and toned while the heart rate increases, pumping blood at a faster rate.
As bodies feel the benefit of a workout, it's a good practice to have a few moments to rest after dancing, especially if it was a fast dance.
A great benefit of dance exercise is that after dancing, there is often an improvement in a person's disposition, so it's a win-win situation all the way around.
6-Source of Inspiration
Sometimes watching other people dancing provides a great source of inspiration to people who desire to learn other types of dances, or wish to improve the techniques of the dances they already know.
The act of seeing a person dance, ignites fire inside someone else!
7-Building Affiliations
Professional dancers form affiliations.
Sometimes a dancer may only be known in a limited number of circles until someone in an audience pays close attention. Overnight, a dancer goes from an "unknown" to a "star." Dancing can't help but enhance performance, and the audience cannot help but pay attention!
Finally…
Dance is the Universal Language that compliments people with different tastes, emotions, needs, and backgrounds because there is so much variety. As a result, dancing has not only become a universal art form, but a universal language that dancers around the world speak!
Remember… Dance is the language of the soul; it has always been and will always be our first love…So dance your hearts out!
